A Brief History of the Yamaha YZF-R7

If you've been following the Yamaha product line for a while, you may remember the R7 that was introduced over 20 years ago. At the time, it was Yamaha's flagship homologated World Superbike offering - designed to compete in the Superbike World Championship. These are incredibly rare motorcycles; with only 500 going into production.

In 2020, Yamaha then retired the predecessor to the original R7, the R6. It was a controversial decision that caused them to go a year without a 600cc class supersport. The controversy continued when Yamama announced the new R7 - and that it would have a parallel twin engine instead of an inline four.

The 2023 Yamaha YZF R7 may share a namesake and a racing pedigree, but was instead built to provide a supersport riding experience that makes it stand out on track days and excel on highways.

2023 Yamaha YZF-R7 Top Features

The 2023 R7 features a 689cc inline 2-cylinder DOHC fuel-injected CP2 engine. It has 4-valves per cylinder, with cooling liquid cylinders. It has strong and lightweight forged aluminum pistons which further contribute to its sporty power and performance. Its 270-degree crankshaft delivers linear torque for exciting acceleration and limited vibration.

It also features a brand-new Assist and Slipper clutch to lighten the clutch lever's load. This results in a seamless downshifting experience with a controlled response to the bike's engine braking. This innovation paves the way for a more inclusive supersport riding experience, catering to a broader range of riding experiences.

Additionally, for fast and easy upshifts, riders have the option to equip the R7 with the Quick Shift System (QSS). This helps to support upshifts when the shift rod detects movement in the gearshift lever. Once the sensor on the shift rod detects motion in the gearshift lever, the engine output undergoes immediate adjustments based on ECU calculations. This process effectively negates the drive torque of the current gear engaged, facilitating quicker and smoother gear changes.

Adjustable spring preload and rebound damping strikes are the only tweaks to the rear end - but those were made prior to the 2023 release.

Chassis, Suspension, and Brakes

The YZF-R7 has been thoughtfully designed to offer a comfortable and confidence-boosting riding position, achieved through a carefully developed rider's triangle and a racing-inspired cockpit. The new seat and tank covers with deep knee pockets ensure optimal hip and knee alignment. This allows riders to make adjustments while maintaining a secure feel in corners and a strong grip during braking. The separate clip-on handlebars are positioned in harmony with the rider's hip and footpeg placement.

This Yamaha is known for its sporty suspension thanks to an adjustable inverted KYB 41mm front fork that allows for preload, rebound, and compression adjustments. This fork is finely tuned with optimized spring rates and damping settings, enhancing the front-end feedback during cornering and braking. In other words, this motorcycle eats corners and agile direction changes for breakfast.

Constructed from high-strength steel and featuring a rigid-mounted aluminum center brace, the frame of the YZF-R7 achieves an ideal balance of rigidity and lightness.

Brembo's specially designed radial brake master cylinder pairs effortlessly with radial-mounted front brake calipers that grip onto dual 298mm front brake rotors. Inspired by racing, this combination is designed to optimize its potent braking pressure for a smooth and consistent slowdown, with outstanding power and control.

2023 Yamaha R7 Specifications

Its wet weight is 414 pounds - a bit heavier than others (for some context, the R6 was 416 dry). This gives it stability at high speeds. A more narrow and lightweight chassis also means it has a sporty and responsive ride.

For increased torsional rigidity, it has new aluminum center braces near the swingarm pivot. Factors like these together make this Yamaha known for power, acceleration, and a comfortable riding position. It has a starting cost of $9,199.

Torquey Performance for Experienced Riders

The R7 Yamaha is built to provide linear and nimble responsiveness to rider input, but it requires a certain degree of sophistication. Thanks to the all new Assist and Slipper clutch, the bike's engine braking feels more balanced than ever before.

These factors together with a performance-driven pedigree means that this is a motorcycle that is ready to show the world what the Yamaha R-series can do… With the right rider.

This bike also has the slimmest proportions of the entire R series family  - allowing for decreased wind resistance and for an even greater feeling of power.

If urban commuting is likely to be a portion of your experience, its new seat design will make doing so a breeze. This new design is built to be adjustable and comfortable - so you can easily adjust to make it perfect for zipping through the city at night.

It also is recognized for giving riders a sturdy body hold while braking - further enhancing your control and stability.

Is Yamaha R7 good for beginners?

Not exactly, but with the right rider training it could be.

Though the confident cornering performance and DOHC inline twin cylinder may be calling, this street legal superbike has an aggressive style that puts the rider's body in position to take on it all. But it’s crucial to have the experience to manage it - whether on track or the street.

For that reason, we believe there are other options out there better for new riders. But don’t be afraid to keep this one on your ‘life goals’ list in the meantime.

A Dramatic, yet Efficient Aesthetic

The Yamaha YZF-R7 is a stylish and attractive motorcycle. It's available in Team Yamaha Blue, Performance Black and now also, Intensity White. The YZF-R7 features an adaptive bi-functional LED headlight that complements its iconic R-Series M-shaped intake duct and twin-eye appearance. Its sharp tail might even remind you of the R1.

The tail light unit, rear turn signals, and front turn signals all feature lighting light emitted diode (LED) elements. These equal minimal power draw and provide brilliant illumination for visibility and style - no matter what time of day.

Sleek R-series styling means a low profile fuel tank design and separate clip on handlebars only add to the refined sportbike ergonomics expected from this motorcycle. The cockpit not only puts the rider's body perfectly in place, it also shows off the style of the bike.

The motorcycle boasts a comprehensive full-LCD instrument panel that provides riders with information on gear position, fuel levels, real-time and average fuel economy, water temperature, clock, and more. All this information is presented in a high-contrast display for easy readability so you won't have to search for it.

Of the entire R-series family, this Yamaha may be the most attractive.

Yamaha’s legendary styling combines eye-catching design with a truly impressive machine. The LEDs offer long life and highlight the design found in its new bodywork. It is built to naturally grip the road, providing an unforgettable ride with an eye to style. This lightweight frame and slim design provides for optimal aerodynamics while it reduces resistance - resulting in a truly exhilarating ride.
