Ducati was founded in 1926 in Bologna, Italy, to produce vacuum tubes and other radio components. After World War II, they split the business and began manufacturing the “Cucciolo”, an engine for mounting on bicycles. Their true foray into motorcycles came in the 1960s when they produced the fastest 250cc road bike available at that time.

Since then, much has changed but one thing has remained the same. The Ducati name has become synonymous with speed, quality, and style. And the Ducati DesertX is certainly no exception. However, what sets it apart from other production bikes is its taste for the paved and off road alike.

Ducati Desert X Specs

The 2022 DesertX is an entirely new bike for Ducati. It was actually presented as a concept bike at EICMA 2019, but the positive reaction encouraged Ducati to put it into production. The 2022 Ducati Desertx price starts at $16,795, putting it on par with other comparable adventure bikes. It has a weight of 492 pounds and the seat height is 34.4 in, giving it excellent ground clearance, making it a fantastic choice for off-road riding, but a little tall for some. The Desert X has a top speed of 130MPH Est.

Additional specs for the Desert X motorcycle are as follows:

  • Engine: Liquid-cooled, transverse 90-degree L-Twin, desmodromic DOHC w/ 4 valves per cyl.

“Exploration. Fun. Performance.” These are the three words that Ducati uses to describe the Desert X. And given the minimalist aesthetic, coupled with six ride modes for on and off road performance,  we completely agree. It’s a lighter and more refined bike than some of its predecessors and you can see the inspiration from the 80s and 90s Paris Dakar epics. The DesertX is a true modern Ducati.

Built on a Scrambler 110 base, it features a 21” front wheel and 18” rear wheel. This makes it an ideal option for those looking for a motorcycle with strong off road capabilities (particularly in enduro mode), as well as the refined ride necessary for long stints on the highway. From the first touch, the Ducati DesertX is an incredibly versatile bike with 110 hp and 68 lb-ft of torque cleanly packaged into a retro, but modern, scrambler-reminiscent design.

Performance Factors

The 2022 Ducati DesertX boasts a 937 cc L-Twin engine, making it as comfortable in the desert as it is in the city. It’s the same engine found in the Supersport, Hypermotard, and Multristrada V2, with some updates for this bike in particular. As mentioned, its generous ground clearance makes for excellent riding off road. (Though if you want to just hit the cruise control and enjoy one of its power modes for exactly that, you'll be equally as comfortable.)

It has six riding modes: Sport, Touring, Wet, and Urban, including two off road modes: Enduro and Rally. Gearing is adjusted between riding modes, with the lowest gears designed to manage rough terrain when you go off road. Power levels can all be adjusted directly through the instrument panel. Put it in Enduro mode and you’ll see output limited to 75 horsepower with ABS intervention reduced to level 2 and traction control to level 3. ABS can also be completely disabled in both off road modes. Sport mode and touring mode provide full power, at 110 horsepower. Wet mode reduces it to 95 horsepower. Rally mode gives you full engine power output and reduced electronic controls.

Lean-sensitive cornering ABS, Ducati wheelie control, engine braking adjustment, and Ducati quick shift are standard on the Desert X and provide riders with additional safety. Brembo brakes and ABS cornering are also factory standard. Its Kayaba long travel suspension is recognized for its proven off-road riding success. Additionally, its rear monoshock (also Kayaba) is fully adjustable in compression, rebound, and preload, allowing for 220 mm of rear wheel travel.

Though some consider this to be Ducati's first true foray into the adventure bike segment, the DesertX demonstrates their commitment to building a bike that is versatile enough to thrive in rally mode and sport alike. The new chassis features a fully adjustable kyb suspension, boasting 9.1 inches of travel in front and 8.7 inches in the rear. And a first for a Ducati adventure bike, a 21” front / 18” rear tubeless wheelset.

The standard tires are the Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR but more pavement friendly options are also available if you'd rather put it in sixth gear and stay in touring mode. The ride modes cover four power modes of full, high, medium, and low, which adjust throttle response and power output. IMU-supported rider aids include Ducati traction control, wheelie control, cornering ABS, and engine brake control.
