Installers had trouble with the fog lights on my 2016 Tiger XRT. The lights had to be removed, then re-installed. I wasn't expecting that and it added a lot to the labor cost.
Excellent Product
Fast
Bars look great! Little bit of a job installing them and getting them to fit just right, but once on I’m really liking them. Fairly quick delivery from Moto Machines.
Super hard to install. Instructions that come with the product are awful!!!!! You need a 12" extension with a swivel to hold down the nuts to the engine mount bolts on either side of the bike, also I had to buy a $30 tap set to tap the threads so the bolts will screw is. Make sure you tighten everything at the end once bars are properly lined up and symmetrical on both sides. The bars look great on the bike, Jury is still out on how solid they are since the attachment to the front frame of the bike plastic.
Thank you for your review. Most have not had an issue installing and if you use a second person as the instructions recommend, you will have an easier time. When I installed these, It was much easier with help.
Part was received quickly! Fit was great and install went smooth. Love the way it looks on the bike!
Thanks for making stout tank guards for my bike. They took a couple hours to install due largely to the required bodywork removal. A helper is good to have for assembly. I was concerned about the possibility of harmonic vibration and was happy to find that wasn’t the case with these bars.
Outstanding Quality! Directions leave a lot of room for improvement.
Best of the New Year World!
Took two attempts to install. Instructions that come with the product are aweful!!!! Had to find english instructions to download on the web that were much better but still not good enough. Forums saved me!! You need two people to install and a 12" extension with swivel to hold down the nuts to the engine mount bolts on either sides of the bike. Aside from that it was pretty standard. Make sure you tighten everything at the end once bars are properly lined up and symmetrical on both sides. Bars look great. on the bike Jury is still out on how solid they are since the attachment to the front frame of the bike plastic?!!
First thing, Yes, I would recommend these tank guards. They look great on the bike, and compliment the OEM engine guards that come on the Tiger. But, there are two things to point out; the English directions are difficult to follow and understand. Second, you will find it much easier if you have someone else present to help you do the install. Here's a tip to remember.; when removing the OEM engine mounting bolts use a 14mm socket on the inside. The bolts that you will use from Hepco Becker use a 17mm nut and you might think that the nut on the backside of the engine mount that you cannot see also takes a 17mm, but you'd be mistaken, as I was. It takes a 14 mm socket.
Saved the motorcycle, fell over on trail, no scratches/no damage. Compliments the stock lower guard, took 1 1/2 hrs for dealer to install. 2016 tiger 800 xca.
I Looked at a lot of crash bars and read a lot of reviews and settled on these Hepco Becker Tank bars for my 2016 800 XRX. They are now installed and look natural for the bike. The instructions were straight forward and easy to understand. Installation was a nightmare for me, account I just keep messing up. What should have taken 3 hrs took me 9 hrs. You need a 17mm deep socket attached to a swivel adaptor and 2 long extensions. You'll need a flashlight too. You definitely need 2 people In the set up. Torque on the engine mount bolts, hopefully I read it right is about 35 foot pounds. Once initial set up is complete, you can take the bars off in 2 minutes. Takes about 2 minutes to reinstall also. Taking the Plastic off around the tank: Make sure you know exactly where each mounting screw comes from. I took videos and am glad I did. I would have been total dumbfounded had I not took videos. Mounting the front adaper: I ended up taking off the headlite (4 small bolts) and the horn so I could have way more room to work with. Pulled the light wiring harness wire/tie/plug and routed the wire it to the opposite side and zip tie it up (my own zip tie) so it would not rub at all as the forks were turned in either direction. All said and done, I would install them myself again. I really like how they look. Now I am thinking about getting the matching engine guards
With installation completed, I can say the final product looks good. These bars are light and out of the way. They are somewhat a challenge to install. A lot easier to have a second person for a small part of the installation. Outside of that its a one person job.
These bars are awesome. The only issues I had were the lack of specific torque values included in the instructions. HB just provided a sheet with three different values. Somewhat confusing. Also they did it provide a specific torque value for the frame adaptor. I over tightened and cracked it. I was worried I would be SOL but the guys at Moto Machines were awesome and sent me out a replacement right away with the correct torque value (10nm). Overall fit and finish of the bars is outstanding. Caution when installing though - you need two people and definitely need long socket extensions. Make sure to take your time and mock up the fitting with the tank plastics on them remove them and tighten everything down. Be sure to check steering clearance before final tightening as well. Also, there is a lot of stuff in the forums about these potentially causing engine damage if the bike is dropped. That doesn't seem to be an issue with the redesign of these bars. They don't mount to the engine which is great (they use engine mount locations). Also if installed correctly they shouldn't impact front suspension travel from what I can see. All in all great bars, great price, great service! Just take your time with a friend and you'll be happy!
This is a great DIY project and is not that difficult - but only IF you have the right tools, patience, and a little extra instruction. The documentation is a little weak and thankfully there was enough information from other DIYers (who had previously completed their own installation) for me to get through this. Be sure to read all instructions first, get the right torque wrench, and pay special attention to a small wiring harness that runs through the front forks. Otherwise - a great product and definitely recommend!
I was expecting these crash bars to be strong, but I wasn't expecting them to be quite as beefy as they are. The build quality and finish is excellent. The instructions are translated from German so they are a little odd at times but between what is written and the diagrams it is easy to figure out how all the hardware goes. I considered putting 4 stars for these bars as they really are quite fiddly to install. You have to carefully take out the forward engine mounts bolts and then install the ones provided in the kit. This in and of itself is not difficult until you have to leave them just loose enough to line everything up so the bars fit right and are symmetrical. In addition to this, you have to be very careful with the center mount on the frame up to the instrument cluster. The wiring harness of the bike has to be taken off of a mount and then attached to the side of the frame tube instead of underneath. This sounds just fine until you make sure that the steering of the bike will not rub or bend it in any way to cause wear to it. I ended up removing the horn assembly and rerouting the wiring harness from one side of it to the other side to get the room with the harness that I needed to secure it in such a way as it wouldn't come into contact at all with the steering or suspension when turned to full lock left or right. Aside from the fiddly install of these bars, once they installed they are very sturdy and pleasing to the eye. I have since had them off multiple times to work on the bike etc. Once installed correctly they are extremely easy to remove to work on the bike. Just take of the two bolts from each side and the bars come off leaving the mounting hardware that was so carefully installed and positioned into the exact right place during initial install in place so when you're finishing doing what you had to do they just bolt back up... this is also why the initial install is fiddly. If you don't get it right then taking the bars off and back on each time will be that bit harder as you fight to get them exactly lined up again. All in all, I would highly recommend getting these bars. Build quality and looks they are top notch. A bit fiddly to install, so just take your time, don't get frustrated and do it right the first time and you'll have many years of headache free protection with these bars!
little work to install but easier than others I have done, heavy duty and looks good
I installed this on my 2016 Tiger 800 XCA and it fit great. I really like that I can retain the stock engine crash bars and add this protection for the tank. I like the looks of these and they don't get in the way of my knees. It would be nice if these were made out of stainless steel, matched to color/texture of the stock crash bars and protected the turn signals more. I made some brackets to mount the turn signals in front of the radiator attaching to the H&B crash bars which keeps them from getting damaged when the bike goes on its side. I already dropped the bike on a loose rocky ascent and it did a great job of protecting the bike. just got a couple scratches on the crash bars and the hand guards.
