I ride a 2022 Tiger 900 Rally Pro, and I went with Hepco & Becker (H&B) when I upgraded the OEM engine guards and skid plate as well as adding tank guards. I just want to offer some food for thought with regard to the H&B guards. The installation of the H&B skid plate and tank guards seemed rock-solid from the start and have performed as expected - lots of solid protection. I did not, however, have the same warm-and-fuzzy during the installation of the H&B engine guards. I thought that the inward-pointing end of engine guard tube was unsupported by any means; the polymer center connector may have been designed to transfer some force from side to side but seemed to only offer an aesthetic alignment (not bolted in place); and the replacement H&B M8 20mm mounting bolts were 5mm shorter than all but one of the OEM 25mm bolts. Of course, unintentionally dropping the bike from a slow stall in our hay field was without consequences, but as I later found out a minor left-sided tip-over around a sandy-silty curve on a forest service road along the Wyoming BDR was another matter. Although technically a moving violation on my part I wasnt at all prepared to see the extent of damage to the left guard and my bike after this tip-over. I cant say what the sequence of the left engine guards seeming failures were, but they included: a cracked/collapsed weld at the Y of the left guard's smaller secondary mounting arm; separation of the main tube from the center connector resulting in the left tube impacting and denting an exhaust pipe; collapse of the engine guard onto the alternator cover resulting in a crack and a minor oil leak; and most critically, a fracture of the lower left OEM mounting point on the block for the engine guard. This OEM mounting point broke like a fractured tooth and exposed a bent H&B M8 bolt. Of course, it is possible that the aluminum was in some way defective at this point, or perhaps the casting design left something to be desired. Its also possible that the engine guard unexpectedly failed under a minor tip-over. Also, IMHO I feel that neither my installation nor the rigors of this off-road riding were likely at fault, but as I said, this was a minor moving violation on my part.
