What's (arguably) more important than how fast your bike can go?

How fast it can stop.

And the main influencing factor here is your brake system. Brakes do more than just stop the bike though; they're also integral to balance, stability, and overall control.

Not unlike a car, when you hit the brakes, much of the weight shifts forward. In fact, the front brake is responsible for about 70% of stopping power, where the rear brake primarily helps with stability.

If you are getting ready to choose new motorcycle brakes, it can be helpful to first understand the mechanics of it all.

In this post, we'll first walk through the essentials of how brakes work, then we'll look at what factors you should consider when purchasing brakes. We'll also take a quick look at the basics of installation as some parts can be managed at home, while others are better left to the professionals.

How do brakes work?

Before we get into the mechanism itself, let's start with the core parts of the overall brake system:

  1. Brake callipers: Clamp pads onto discs/rotors to create stopping force.
  2. Brake pads: Generate friction against the discs/rotors and vary by material and performance.
  3. Brake discs (rotors): Absorb and dissipate heat generated during braking.
  4. Master cylinders: Convert lever input into hydraulic pressure.
  5. Brake lines: Carry brake fluid from the master cylinder to the callipers.
  6. Brake fluid: Transfers force hydraulically but degrades over time due to moisture absorption.

A motorcycle's brake system works by converting rider input into controlled stopping force with brake fluid. When you pull a brake lever or push a brake pedal, a piston inside the master cylinder moves forward; pressurizing the brake fluid into hydraulic pressure. The amount of pressure depends on a number of factors, including how "hard" you brake and the configuration of the lever and master cylinder itself.

The hydraulic pressure then travels through the brake lines to the calipers. The caliper pistons push the brake pads against the spinning brake disc. This creates friction between the pads and the discs, ultimately slowing and then stopping the wheel. Brake fluid is a super important part of this process as if it overheats or absorbs too much moisture it can boil - resulting in a spongy lever feel and reduced braking power.

Keep in mind that brake pads and rotors need to come to temperature in order for the friction material on the disc (rotor) to bite and generate braking force.

Choosing your motorcycle brakes

There are two main types of brakes to choose from: disc and drum. Disc brakes are pretty much standard on motorcycles in 2026, but drum brakes are common on older models. Disc brakes are recognized for their stronger power, better heat dissipation, and easy maintenance.

Another major differentiator is the presence of ABS, or an anti-lock braking system. ABS is a significant step forward in terms of safety because it prevents lockup when you have to brake hard - particularly on wet or slippery road surfaces. It's been required in many parts of the world, including the EU and UK since the mid 2010s.

Types of brake pads and rotors

For the sake of this article, we are going to be focusing specifically on brake pads and discs/rotors. Pads in particular are the part that you will go through the fastest. They are also the most simple to replace, making them an approachable activity for those who are starting to get more into maintaining their bikes themselves.

Materials

The three most common materials for brake pads are:

  1. Organic
  2. Sintered
  3. Ceramic

Organic pads are generally made from a combination of materials including rubber, carbon, and glass. These are bound together with a resin. They are quieter and cheaper than others, making them a great choice for a casual daily rider. However, they aren't as effective in wet conditions and are known to wear out a bit faster.

Sintered pads are a popular option on many modern bikes, in particular heavy cruisers and sportbikes. Made from metal particles fused under heat and pressure, these are a long lasting and durable option. They're also recognized for superior performance under heavy braking and in less-than-ideal road conditions. The downside? They are a bit noisier than their ceramic and organic counterparts.

Ceramic pads are generally reserved for fast road, track, or racing bikes. As their name suggests, they are made from ceramic materials - often with copper fibers. They're made to tolerate the extreme heat that arises from days on the track or aggressive riding. They're not a cheap option, but they do last a long time.

Design

Rotors are another essential component of your brake system. They generally fall into one of the following categories, each with their own benefits and drawbacks:

  1. Round
  2. Patterned
  3. Wavy

Round rotors are a popular option for everyday riding. They're reliable, offer consistent braking performance and have a lower wear rate.

Patterned rotors are used by those searching for enhanced heat dissipation and reduced weight, thanks to cross-drilling.

Wavy rotors are also made to improve cooling and reduce weight for better performance. They achieve this thanks to an undulating edge.

Selecting your new brake pads and discs/rotors

Both pad and rotor selection should align with your anticipated riding intensity, budget, and your preference between durability and braking performance.

Keep in mind that motorcycle brake components are model-specific; it's important to choose pads and discs designed for your exact bike. Whether you ride a BMW, a Yamaha, or even a Vespa, selecting parts that match your make and model ensures proper fitment and performance.

Brake pads

Picking the right pads is critical because they are the part that actually makes contact with the discs. Which you choose depends heavily on where and how you ride.

As a reminder:

  1. Organic pads are a great choice for daily riders and urban commuting. They're durable, affordable, quiet, and effective.
  2. Sintered pads are ideal for riders who like to push the envelope a little bit, but aren't quite racing. They are a bit noisier, so if you are only commuting, the tradeoff might not be worth it.
  3. Ceramic pads are for performance. They are the most heat resistant of the bunch, making them ideal for the track or for hard braking. That said, they are a more expensive option.

Brake discs/rotors

Unsurprisingly, the same criteria that you use for choosing pads applies to rotors as well. Brake rotors come in two main categories: floating and fixed. They differ mainly in how the braking surface mounts to the hub - affecting heat management, consistency, cost, and intended use.

A floating rotor has two distinct parts: an outer braking ring and an inner carrier (hub) that are connected by floating buttons or rivets. Such a design allows the braking surface to expand and move slightly as it becomes hotter. This results in more consistent braking under heavy use, reduced risk of warping, better pad contact, and an improved feel when riding and braking aggressively. You'll generally find a floating rotor on sportbikes and superbikes - particularly for use in racing.

The downside to floating rotors? As you might have guessed, the increased complexity leads to an increased price. They are also known to produce a light rattling noise. Some examples of floating rotors from EBC are:

  1. X: Round profile performance rotors
  2. MX: Floating motocross/off-road rotors
  3. Pro-Lite: Lightweight, performance-oriented floating street rotors.

On the other hand you can have a fixed rotor. This is a single-piece disc or rotor that is mounted to the hub and does not move. They are more simple, quieter, less expensive, and in some cases, lighter. The drawback is that they are more prone to heat-related distortion and have less consistent lever feel compared to their fully floating counterparts. However, for most riders who are using their bikes for commuting or pleasure purposes, they serve just fine.

Some examples of fixed rotors from EBC include:

  1. MD (Moto Disc): Solid, OEM-style replacement rotors.
  2. CD (Contoured Disc): OEM replacement but with a light contour for cleaning and cooling. These have a mild wave (more about that below).

EBC in particular also makes their INOX line, which are stainless steel rotors that can be fixed or floating depending on application.

Beyond being floating or fixed, a rotor can also be oversized or wavy; or a combination of the two. An oversized brake rotor provides additional leverage and stopping power, thanks to additional surface area. However, because of its size, it may require additional modifications to the caliper.

A wavy rotor (which can also be oversized) provides enhanced cooling, reduced weight, and self cleans - making them a solid choice for off-road riding. One example of a wavy rotor is the DX, which is EBC's aggressive wave rotor.

If commuting or cruising is your preference, round discs can be a great choice. They're durable, reliable, and cost effective.

For those who want to push their bikes a bit harder, but still want some durability, consider patterned rotors. They do offer improved cooling and reduced weight, thanks to the holes, compared to round discs.

Heading to the track? You'll want wavy rotors. These are made for performance and are priced accordingly. However, you do get to enjoy the lightest, coolest, and fastest braking response.

Step 1: Choose the correct motorcycle brake pads

  1. Verify pads are designed for your exact make, model, and year.

Step 2: Prepare the brake caliper for new pads

Motorcycle brake disc (rotor) installation basics

Once brake pads are installed correctly, attention often turns to the motorcycle brake discs (rotors). Proper rotor installation ensures consistent braking performance and extends pad and rotor life. You do not need to change your brake discs when you change the pads, but it is often recommended to extend the lifespan of your new pads. That said, installing new pads on severely worn rotors can reduce braking performance and shorten pad life.

Here are some signs your rotors need to be replaced:

  1. The rotor is below minimum thickness (check the stamping on the rotor or the service manual).
  2. You feel pulsing or vibration under braking (possible warping or runout).
  3. The rotor has deep grooves, cracks, or heat spots.
  4. The rotor surface is heavily uneven or damaged.
  5. The rotor has been overheated repeatedly (common on track bikes or hard riders).

Step 1: Select the correct motorcycle brake rotor

Confirm the rotor matches OEM specifications:

  1. Rotor diameter and thickness.

  3. Fixed or floating design.

Incorrect brake rotors can cause vibration, pulsing, or caliper misalignment.

Step 2: Clean and position the brake rotor

It may sound simple, but bedding-in is a required step after brake installation. Here's an easy way to do it:

  1. Perform multiple moderate stops from 30–40 mph.
  2. Allow brakes to cool between applications.
  3. Avoid hard stops or holding the brakes when stationary and hot.

Proper bedding-in ensures even pad transfer and consistent braking feel.

Common motorcycle brake installation mistakes
