Motorcycle Rear Sets 101

How to Install Motorcycle Rearsets
Installing rearsets depends to some degree on the bike and manufacturer. That said there are a few general guidelines you can follow:
- Start by removing the old footpegs and carriers. Don’t forget the location and orientation of rubber or steel washers. Hold on to the hardware until your installation is complete.
- Check the orientation of the backing plates and see if you’ll need any shims.
- Begin putting everything together by greasing the shift-lever pivot assembly.
- Make sure the mount has the correct orientation and install any necessary spacers. This is an important step as not doing so will result in a sloppy shifter and brake.
- Thread the standoff for the shift rod into the lever.
- Bolt the carrier to the bike. Loctite is a great option for this. Then start to tighten all new shifting components.
- Check to see if you are happy with the new locations of your peg, shifter, and brake.
- Move to the other side of the bike and loosely bolt everything together prior to adding the carriers to the frame.
- Connect the brake-light switch.
- Install the footpegs and get on the bike so you can check alignment.

Chain Adjusters: Tension without Tools
Checking your bike’s chain tension is a crucial part of ongoing maintenance. You should be adjusting your chain every couple of rides, so adding a chain adjuster will save your hours over the lifetime of your bike. Otherwise, you’re stuck loosening a bolt and then you can actually get to the adjusting part.
But if you’d prefer to skip the extra bolt tightening and loosening, a chain adjuster allows for a much more seamless experience.
How to Install a Motorcycle Chain Adjuster
Thankfully, it’s a pretty easy skill that can be followed across a wide range of motorcycles. To install a chain adjuster:
- Start by securing your motorcycle on a stand or lift. This will make it easier to access the chain adjuster and remove the old one.
- Use a wrench or socket to loosen the lock nut on the existing chain adjuster. You may need to use a breaker bar if the nut is very tight.
- Once the lock nut is loose, remove it and the existing chain adjuster from the motorcycle.
- Take your new chain adjuster and remove the lock nut and washer from the adjuster bolt.
- Insert it into the swingarm of your motorcycle where the old adjuster was located. Make sure it is facing the correct direction and is aligned with the rear sprocket.
- Insert the chain adjuster.
- Insert the adjustment bolt through the chain adjuster and into the swingarm.
- Replace the washer and lock nut onto the adjustment bolt and tighten it down securely with a wrench or socket.
Then, repeat steps 2-8 for the other side of the motorcycle. Though installing a new motorcycle chain adjuster is a relatively straightforward process, it is not one you want to leave to chance. Your mechanic can handle the installation for you if needed.
