BMW GS Series: 1100-1300 | What You Need to Know
BMW motorcycles are often described as the "Swiss Army knives" of the motorcycle world. And the BMW GS Series is no exception.
This reputation is rooted in their distinct balance of ruggedness, refinement, and versatility, making them suitable for both long-distance touring and off-road adventures.
Add in a dash of German engineering precision, and you’ve got a machine that is known for reliability and performance.
The evolution of the GS series, and in particular from the R1000 to the R1300, is an excellent example of this. Introduced in the 1990s, these bikes were known for the significant upgrades that they brought to the table. These include the Paralever and Telelever suspension systems, as well as early anti-lock braking systems (ABS) and the boxer engine's hallmark torque.
These features quickly cemented their reputation among touring and adventure riders. Later models like the R1200 sported electronically adjustable suspension, which led it to being one of the best-selling adventure bikes in the world. In fact, you’ll often see a number of GS models included in BMW's best sellers.
In 2023, BMW introduced the R1300 GS, marking a new generation of the Series. This bike brings a lighter frame, more power, and advanced electronics, continuing the tradition of high performance and comfort.
What does GS stand for in BMW?
GS originally stood for “Gentleman Scrambler,” but was later updated to Gelände/Straße (German: terrain/street). GS motorcycles are distinguishable from other BMW models by their longer travel suspension, an upright riding position, and larger front wheels – generally measuring 19” to 21”.
Now that we’ve gotten some history out of the way, let’s take a look at four of our favorite GS models. We’ll cover specs, what makes them different, and top accessories that owners won’t want to miss.
A 90’s Icon: the BMW R1100 GS
The BMW R1100GS is a dual-sport motorcycle introduced in 1993, with production running from 1994 to 1999 by BMW Motorrad in Berlin, Germany. It features a 1,085 cc flat-twin (boxer) engine, initially seen in the R1100RS in 1992, and became the first GS model to use an air- and oil-cooled engine. This was a significant change as it moved from BMW’s air-cooled "airhead" engines, a tradition dating back to the R32 in 1923.
This new boxer engine added partial oil-cooling and a four-valve-per-cylinder design, operated by a single camshaft with chain drive. It also included Motronic fuel injection, replacing the notorious carburetors of earlier models. The R1100GS remained in production until 1999, when it was replaced by the R1150GS.
